The Portuguese superstar hinted that he would be considering his future at the club this summer after helping them achieve a third consecutive European Cup.
He commented “it has been great being at Real Madrid” before refusing to answer a question pushing him on his future, instead saying: “The main thing was to win, to go down in history”.
“Now it’s time to enjoy this. In the next few days I’ll give the fans, who have been by my side, an answer. It’s been great being at Real Madrid,” he said after the final whistle in Kiev. “I’ll speak in the next few days. Now it’s time to enjoy the moment. The future of any player isn’t important. We’ve made history.”
However, he appeared to renege on those comments during Real’s celebrations at the Bernabeu and in the city of Madrid on Sunday night as the team were welcomed back by legions of supporters draped in the famous white of the club.
When addressing the crowd, Ronaldo said: “See you next year!”
He also added: “I feel proud to play for the biggest club in the world.I’m very comfortable here. With these players it’s impossible not to win.”
The 33-year-old had earlier apologised for his comments on the pitch in Kiev – words which reportedly caused an argument with captain Sergio Ramos, who was furious Ronaldo took the opportunity to make the team’s achievement about himself.
“Maybe it wasn’t the perfect timing to talk about personal things. Maybe I’ve made a mistake or not,” he said on Sunday morning. “It takes away from a beautiful, historic moment for us that is winning three Champions Leagues in a row, obviously it is a special moment.
“A player’s personal things aren’t the most important thing now, it might have been taken out of context but maybe I shouldn’t have said what I said. But when you are honest, sometimes you say things that you don’t mean to, but it’s something that’s been a long time coming.
“I’ll talk in a week when I am with the national team because I don’t want to take this top moment away from Real Madrid.
“The fans who are always on my side, I always have them in my heart. It’s not the right moment to talk or for my team mates to talk about the future.”
